Photojournalists are reporters whose medium is photography, and whose tool is the camera rather than the keyboard.
Photojournalists produce, collect, edit, arrange and publish photos that inform viewers and readers. They tell stories through their photos. Like traditional journalists, photojournalists should strive to report an event objectively, and with attention to time and context.
A photojournalist can use a traditional camera, or a video camera and computer to tell a story visually. As a photojournalist, you can work from nearly any location -- your hometown, or a country a thousand miles away. In any case, the work of a photojournalist cannot be done in a studio. As a photojournalist, your goal is to go where the story is, and take credible and powerful photos. Unlike a fine art photographer, you will not be telling your story or vision, but the story of others. Some photos taken by photojournalists, however, will inevitably be used as propaganda or to promote specific policies.
Along with a willingness to travel to a variety of locations, you should have technical proficiency with cameras and related tools, the ability to keep up with changing technologies, strong ethics (no image manipulation aside from making the image clear), persistence and patience.
Many photojournalists have a bachelor's degree in photography, journalism, liberal arts, or even government science or international relations. Some schools offer degrees specifically in photojournalism. For example, Brook's Institute of Photography has a School of Visual Journalism.
The Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC) is the programmatic accrediting body for photojournalism. This programmatic accreditation is not a prerequisite for all photojournalism jobs, but it does tell your future employer that your school's program was approved by practicing photojournalists.
Photojournalists make between $24,000 to $60,000 depending on education, experience, and location. Those with more years of experience can make around $66,000.
